Cupid struck when the two of them worked together in the movie Rangeen Raatein (1956). The movie was to be shot at a hill station Ranikhet. When Geeta Bali learnt about the outdoor shoot, she requested the producer to give her a role in the movie as she wanted to visit Ranikhet.

The producer Kedar Sharma was a good friend of hers and he gave her a cameo role in the movie. Shammi Kapoor and Geeta Bali shared a love for nature. They explored Ranikhet and fell in love with each other. He was only 23, while she was 24. In addition, she had also worked in movies with his elder brother Raj Kapoor and father Prithviraj Kapoor.
The couple was therefore uncertain about how their families would react to their affair. For four months, Geeta Bali kept refusing Shammi Kapoor’s proposals. But she agreed to marry him on August 23, 1955 – on the condition that their wedding would take place on that very day. The two quietly got married at the Banganga temple in Mumbai before informing their respective families.

Geeta Bali continued to act in movies even after her marriage. One of her big successes post her marriage was Jailor (1958). She played the role of a blind girl in the movie and won rave reviews. However, the birth of her two children, Aditya and Kanchan made her ease up on her workload. The last movie she signed up was for Rano. It was a substantial role of a widow remarrying her dead husband’s brother.
Geeta Bali – Her Untimely Death
Geeta Bali was shooting for Rano when she contracted small pox on January 6, 1965. She died on January 21, 1965, so wracked by the disease that she was almost unrecognizable.
Geeta Bali was only 35 years old when she died.
